NICU Update #2

*Kai went from 3lbs 6oz yesterday to 3lbs 9.3oz today!

*Breast milk is being stopped and preemie formula is being started. The reason for this is to see if she has digestive problems or a milk intolerance. We should know soon.

*She is taking the bottle very well!

*She is getting sugar, protein, and fats through IV

*She is still doing well on room air but the doctor is still keeping a close eye on her because she is so small.

NICU Update

Kai’s doctor gave me wonderful news today!

*She’s 3lbs 6.1oz

*Up to 9mL of milk

*She took a bottle last night and today and did amazing on it, so we are one step closer to breastfeeding!

*Aside from that, the next step is to get her in a bassinet like term babies are put in… once that happens and she does well… she will be sent home!!!!!!!!!!

NICU Day 12 (Full Day 11)

*She gained another half ounce

*Being bumped to 6mL per feeding

*She’s going to try the bottle this week and depending on how that goes, towards the end of the week, I’ll be able to breastfeed her for the first time!

*She’s much more active: moving her arms and legs a lot more, opening her eyes more.

NICU Day 11 (Full Day 10) *E*

Sorry about my delay in updates the past few days. Things have been a bit rough lately…I have PPD on top of already having depression and anxiety. The NICU is sucking the life out of me and I’m honestly not motivated to do much.

Kai is doing well. She isnt handling the 5mL of milk too well. It’s pooling in her tummy then after a while it’s being absorbed. They are keeping her a 5mL but not bumping her up again until this resolves.

She’s up to 3lbs 4oz now!!

*E*

Kai is off of all medications. The only things keeping her in the NICU are her weight and that she isnt absorbing all 5mL of milk per feeding. At her 9 pm feeding, her nurse checked to see what was left from 3 hours prior…1.2mL wasnt absorbed…which was better then the feeding prior to that one (it had been 2mL). So, Kai is getting fats through her PICC Line.

NICU Day 8, 9, 10

Day 8:

We are now allowed to hold Kai whenever we want! And she was bumped to 5mL of milk per feeding!

Day 9:

She is handling the milk increase very well!

Day 10:

She had her UAC removed and a new PICC Line put into place. She is doing awesome and is eating very well!

Makaiyah yesterday after I had to put her back in her incubator.

NICU Day 7

Kai weighs 3lbs 1.2oz now. So she has gained back .2oz

Feedings are being bumped up to 2mL and if all goes well maybe to 3mL by the end of the week.

Her Jaundice levels are now 8.2 so they came down a bit from last night.

NICU Day 6 (Technically Full Day 5)

Kai looks amazing for being on room air. She is doing great and it was so great seeing her without the nasal cannula!

On Thursday or Friday her current PICC Line will be removed and replaced by one that can stay in longer with less risk of infection. They will give us a call before the procedure is done.

Her Jaundice levels spiked to a 9 but are currently sitting at an 8.8 so she is still under phototherapy but we are able to hold her now for a bit!

She is still getting 1cc of breast milk at each feeding but not all the milk is being absorbed so that is being monitored.

We asked about general NICU release on weight since she is now 3lbs 1oz. Generally speaking they like to release at about 5lbs but it depends on the baby and how the baby is doing.

As things stand right now, we are looking at April for her to finally be home.

NICU Day 5

The biggest news to report today:

Kai is now on room air!!!!!! Nasal cannula has been taken off!!!!!!!!!

NICU Day 4

My mom and I went to see Kai today. She is finally eating which ended up being perfect timing because my milk came in today as well and I was able to pump a little bit before we went down to see her. She’s eating 1cc every few hours. After I got home, I was able to pump even more then before, so I’m stocking up on milk to take down with me next time we go…which will be Monday and/or Tuesday.

She is also only on 1cc of oxygen now! Such an improvement from where she was before!

She is still under phototherapy and the light was turned up a bit from last night but overall the Jaundice isn’t too bad. Her levels are at a 7.8.
